Storms in life make the heart sick. When problems multiple and concerns arise, several assertions are considered such as, “Where is God?” Why has He not stopped these disastrous events? Are these end-times? “The Lord is returning soon!”
But are troubling situations actually fulfilling end-times prophecies or are they the results of a nation of people turning away from God. Although many people are greatly concerned and question God, still many will pray for answers and understanding to gain peace of mind and protection.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).
Troubling occurrences are written throughout Bible. The Old Testament reveals drought, famine, fires, murders, pestilence, and wars. Also, the whirlwind devastated people and caused much death and destruction. Apparently, troubling situations occurred more often when nations of people turned away from God. The wicked ways of other nations seem to entice them away to worshipped idols and other gods. As generations passed, many had forgotten God’s righteous instructions for living life.
But God would send messages through priests and prophets to encourage people to return to Him (Jeremiah 18:8; Ezekiel 33:19). Many refused to return, and God would hide Himself from them. They were no longer under the shadow of His spiritual protection. When their adversities would rise up against them and overwhelm their lives, then they would remember God and seek Him for help.
“In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, said the LORD thy Redeemer” (Isaiah 54:8).
Jesus Calms the Storm
As Jesus preached to a great multitude on the seashore at the Sea of Galilee, He spoke many parables that taught about life situations (Mark 4:1-8). When He had finished preaching, Jesus entered a boat with His disciples and told them to launch to the other side. While heading to the other side of the sea, Jesus fell asleep, and a storm arose suddenly and troubled the sea. The storm threatened to sink the boat and the disciples were fearful their lives would be lost.
But Jesus was undisturbed and continued sleeping. When He was awakened by the disciples, they said, “Master, do you care not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:38b).
Storms of life caused many to question and wonder whether God really cares. Wars and rumors of wars are a constant threat. Famine and murders are report often. The whirlwind trouble the seas and lives of people. And the same response the disciples expressed to Jesus is continually expressed in these current times. But Jesus calmed the storm for them, and He is still available to calm life’s storms.
“Peace, be still.”
“And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
Still the Raging Storm
Cease the raging winds; calm the troubling seas.
Turn the rising tides and let God’s Peace be your guide.
