Wisdom

“Our God is an Awesome God!  He reigns from heaven above with Wisdom, Power, and Love!”  The words are the chorus or refrain of a Christian song written by Richard Wayne Mullins (1955-1997).  The song rose to number one on Christian radio in 1988.  I had heard the song many times, but I could only remember the chorus.  One evening, as the chorus resonated in my mind, I began singing, “Our God is an Awesome God! He reigns from heaven above with Wisdom, Power, and Love!”  As I repeated the words, an image of God’s Glorious reign over heaven and earth was visualized in my mind.

“Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigns” (1 Chronicles 16:31).

While continuing to sing the chorus, my attention was directed to one word, Wisdom.  God’s Wisdom!  He reigns with Wisdom!  His Spiritual Wisdom!  The New Testament mentions God’s Wisdom as different from human wisdom, especially when human wisdom does not rely on God.  Those who confess to be wise without the knowledge of God, their wisdom is sensual and devilish (James 3:15).

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17).

As I thought further about God’s Wisdom, I was reminded of the wise sayings in the Book of Proverbs.  The first chapter and first verse of Proverbs recognize king Solomon as the writer.  He is also recognized as the writer of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs or Song of Solomon.  Although some question king Solomon’s wisdom, God has purposefully acknowledged him as the wisest biblical king (1 Kings 3:12-13, 4:29-34, 10:23-24).

At the beginning of king Solomon’s reign, God appeared to him in a dream and asked what shall I give you (1 Kings 3:5).  King Solomon answered, understanding to discern between good and bad when making decisions over this great nation of people.  God was pleased with king Solomon’s response.  King Solomon had shown great concern for the nation and the people.  So, God gave him access to His Spiritual qualities of Understanding and Wisdom which empowered king Solomon to be a wise and prosperous king (1 Kings 3:9-13).

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7).

Nevertheless, God’s actions toward king Solomon were NOT as a genie in a bottle granting three wishes.  King Solomon was required to abide by three principal instructions: 1) he must follow God’s ways; 2) he must keep God’s statutes; and 3) he must keep God’s commandments (1 Kings 3:14).  As king Solomon relied on God, his kingdom excelled above all other kingdoms, he was honored above all other kings, and his people were joyful (1 Kings 10:6-8).

“Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth” (Proverbs 4:5).

Even though God had bestowed great honor and prosperity on king Solomon, as he had grown old, he ceased relying on God’s Understanding and Wisdom to discern between good and bad for the nation and the people.  King Solomon directed his concern towards his many wives and their many gods, caused him to falter in maintaining God’s requirements throughout the kingdom (1 Kings 11:4-11).

However, apart from this, king Solomon’s situation is like many great biblical leaders.  Although as humans, they erred when misunderstanding the spiritual aspects of God’s intent, the account of their lives remains as a testament to God’s Awesome reign from heaven.  God’s Spiritual qualities were shown through those biblical leaders, as they followed His ways and principal instructions.

Furthermore, in this current era of human history, God has given all who believe access to His Understanding and Wisdom through faith in our Wise King and Savior, Jesus Christ, who never fails.  Jesus Christ is the Way (John 14:6), and He is the Word (John 1:14), and God has also given us His Holy Spirit as a guide (John 16:13).  Praises to our Awesome God!

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

My Prayer

Dear God, direct the hearts and minds of the nation’s leaders to rely on Your Understanding and Wisdom, as we experience this historical, troubling era.  Your Spiritual qualities are needed to guide us through these crises that have devastated the minds of the people, brought turmoil throughout the land, and caused much despair, grief, and pain.

Dear God, while there is much focus on the leaders’ actions and the unsettling situations in the nation, everyone needs Your Understanding and Wisdom to discern between good and bad when making decisions to resolve these horrendous problems and bring consolation and healing for all.  In Jesus’ Name!  Amen!

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).

“Our God is an Awesome God! He reigns from heaven above with Wisdom, Power, and Love!”
